We relied upon data from the US’s Center for Disease Control, which applied visualization and descriptive analytics techniques to produce the sought-after conclusions. The main variables studied were chronic disease conditions, behavioral health, mental health, demographics, and other overarching conditions.

Our primary focus was on chronic diseases. According to the CDC, A chronic condition “is a physical or mental health condition that lasts more than one year and causes functional restrictions or requires ongoing monitoring or treatment.”[1] In the United States, at least 55% of all residents suffer from a least one form of chronic disease, which includescancer, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart disease, respiratory diseases, arthritis, obesity, and oral diseases. The CDC also reports that in 2018, treatment for chronic illnesses in the United States amounted to $3.6 trillion, or $11,172 per person. Chronic illnesses are the nation’s leading cause of death and disability based upon early detection and effective treatment.

At the present time (Q1/2022), 31 million Americans are without some form of medical or health insurance, with a total country population of 332 million. Meanwhile, the share of uninsured White and Asian people is lower than the national average. Before the Affordable Care Act in 2013, uninsured Americans ranged between 40 to 53 million persons. Yet, with the extension of medical insurance, which includes preventative and diagnostic care benefits, the general incidence of chronic conditions remains high, if not increasing.

In the Change, Healthcare-Harris Poll 2020 Consumer Experience Index, the vast majority of respondents said they want better, more transparent, more accessible communications with their health care providers via more modern platforms and digital experiences that allow them to comparison-shop as they do for many other services—yet two-thirds of those same respondents said every step of the health care process is a chore and only use their medical Advantage in the event of a medical emergency. And in the instances of chronic illness, a medical emergency occurs when “it’s too late.”
